Readings from the Thanksgiving Mass
for the life of Peter James Smith

First Reading
A reading from the Prophet Isaiah (43:1-4)

Now the Lord says this: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters I will be with you and through rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire you shall not be burned and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. You are precious in my sight, and honoured and I love you. Do not fear, for I am with you.

Second Reading
A reading from Paul to the Philippians (2:1-5)

Your life in Christ makes you strong, and his love comforts you. You have fellowship with the Spirit, and you have kindness and compassion for one another. I urge you, then, to make me completely happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and being in one soul and mind.

Don't do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another's interests, not just for your own.

The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had.

Gospel
A Reading from the Gospel according to John (14: 1-6)

Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let your heart be troubled. And trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house;  If there were not, I should havetold you. I am going now to prepare a place for you, And after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with me; So that where I am You may be too. You know the way to the place where I am going."

Thomas said, "Lord. We do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

Jesus said: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me."
